Satellites is the musical mission of one man – Johnny Vic.
In Satellites.01 Johnny wrote, played and produced a remarkable life’s work in just 9 songs across 43 minutes. Quietly unassuming in its arrival, the album was unquestionably one of 2012’s most startling, indeed defining debut albums. And its impact is set to be amplified with a second album, Satellites.02, launching this Summer.
Satellites.01 is welcome relief for those who thought we’d all lost faith in the art of an album. Not just a collection of brilliant songs, but a complete artistic statement, with a sense of narrative purpose: a monument to manhood – the need to provide, to deliver a legacy, to loved ones, to his son. A swell of guitars, piano, horns, strings and chorals, around Johnny’s breathtakingly direct lyrics, Satellites.01 sweeps from euphoria to melancholy and back with easy grace.
Eschewing noise or hype, focusing instead on distinctive packaging and controlled distribution, Satellites.01 was initially launched exclusively into Rough Trade shows as album of the week. It has since become Independent Retailer’s inside tip. Generating a buzz amongst more adventurous record buyers. It has just been voted No 16 album of 2012 Rough Trade and is gathering exceptional blogger & press plaudits.
The album is accompanied by extraordinary visuals, available at www.satellites01/co/uk. The site also features a document of stripped-back like performance of the album in Soho London – one of only three exclusive, curated live shows to date, including shows at the Institute of Contemporary Art and The Tabernacle.
Satellites.01 launches across Europe later this Spring and on Record Store Day in the US.
Meantime, Satellites.02 is now complete and lands in July in the UK. Anticipation of this next missive is already bubbling. Ahead of that, a AA single featuring a track off 01 and 02 will begin the campaign in April.
As a mission, Satellites is as accomplished as it gets.
